Water is more than a vital substance for living organisms: it provides the basic conditions directly affecting the foundations of our daily life and regional societies, as well as the earth's environments. Depending on how water from a river basin is managed, it can also bring disasters upon humans. Our Global COE Program located at the University of Yamanashi aims to teach students and specialists from the Asian region the leading technologies on water management developed by our school's research team, as well as to share with local people the improved welfare through the implementation of such technologies. With the university aiming to further develop and become a world center of knowledge, I would like to extend my welcome to so many of you from around the world to our Global COE Program.

Global COE located at the University of Yamanashi is a center for research and education aiming at practical application of leading technologies for river basin management with the river basic environments specific to the Asian region related to such aspects as hydrology, water resources and quality, and health. With a focus on constant development of river basin symbiotic communities created by nature and humans, the university has taken early steps to make use of the strong cooperation across a variety of fields concerning water issues. Having inherited historical ideas on flood control from the experience of the Fujikawa river basin management, we have achieved research results at river basins both in Japan and around the world, making us the leader of advanced research in this field within the Asian region. Let us study together!
